Cinema Expo (III)

9.00-12.30

PRODUCT PRESENTATION AND SCREENING
Warner Bros. Pictures’
"Superman Returns"

(A Digital Cinema Presentation using DLP Cinema Projection Technology Manufactured by Christie and using the Dolby Digital Cinema Playback System [1] )

14.30-17.30
SMPTE Technical Committee for D-Cinema Technology, DC28 [3]

15.30-17.30

SCREENING
Buena Vista International’s
"Cars"

(A Digital Cinema Presentation using DLP Cinema Projection Technology Manufactured by Christie and using the Dolby Digital Cinema Playback System)

18.30-21.15

Product Reel Presentation and "Special Surprise Screening"
Buena Vista Pictures International
 [5]

21.15-22.30

Post-Screening Party

Sponsored by Buena Vista International and DLP Cinema, A Texas Instruments Technology

Anmerkungen

[1Special Note: In addition to screening this film at the Amsterdam RAI, Cinema Expo delegates, on a limited first-come first-serve basis, will have the opportunity to see "Superman Returns" — an IMAX 3D Experience at the Pathe IMAX Theatre at this time. Attendance is limited due to the seating capacity of the theatre and sign-up instructions will be included in each delegate’s registration package.

[2Stattdessen hier ein Auszug aus Frank Segers Hollywood Reporter Bericht vom 5. Juli 2006

The overseas circuit’s 2006 second half kicked off in flying form during the weekend as Warner Bros. International’s "Superman Returns" bowed to $20 million from 1,750 screens in just 11 markets.

The latest edition of the Warner Bros. franchise, directed by Bryan Singer and starring newcomer Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel, finished No. 1 in every market it played — Korea, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and, in its lone non-Asian date, Puerto Rico.

"Superman’s" international tally plus its six-day domestic boxoffice total pushes its worldwide cume to more than $126 million. Given "Superman’s" expensive production cost — $209 million — on top of pricey development charges (an estimated $60 million), Warners and its "Hollywood hedgefund" production partner, Legendary Pictures, are banking on a long and remunerative overseas run.

The data supports their aspirations. In the first half of this year, four of the five top international hits grossed substantially more abroad than in the U.S., and three of the five are sequels. [...]

Only Fox’s "X-Men: The Last Stand" has grossed more in the U.S. ($228.5 million) than overseas ($202.6 million achieved during the weekend thanks to $3.1 million from 2,954 screens).

According to the MPAA, foreign boxoffice has increased 89% since 2001, and 19 of the top 25 films worldwide last year grossed more overseas than they did in the U.S.

Warners booked "Superman Returns" on a limited basis — given its status as a mega-budget tentpole title — in order to sidestep World Cup soccer-frenzied Europe. Grosses in markets there were depressed by as much as 30% during the weekend. "Superman" won’t move into key markets (Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland) until July 12. Next up is South Africa.

The biggest market during the weekend was Korea, where "Superman" pulled a huge $5.2 million (including previews) from 303 screens. In Australia, the tally was $3.8 million from 409 sites. The Philippines yielded $2.5 million from just 81 screens. In Taiwan, the gross was $1.6 million from 151 sites, and in Thailand, "Superman" drew $1.5 million from 204 locations. [...]
