Apple Close To $3.2 B Purchase Of Beats Electronics;
Deal Would Make It Major Online Radio Competitor

Late last week Apple Inc. was reported to be close to signing a deal to pay $3.2 billion for Beats Electronics in a move expected to make it more competitive with Pandora and Spotify. Lest anyone start thinking Apple’s interest lies in the company’s hyper-fidelity sound technology, it needs to be stressed that the Cupertino, CA-based company solely is interested in Beats’ streaming technology and music subscriptions, which represent the biggest growth area for the recorded music industry. Total revenues in this sector increased 50% to $1.1 billion last year, while digital downloads - Apple’s core music business - fell 2% to $3.93 billion. This was the first annual decline in download sales since Apple launched its online music store in 2003, and coincidentally came during the same time frame that the company launched its iTunes Radio streaming service. According to the Financial Times, Apple executives have admitted the brand needs a tune-up, which may cost the company a hefty premium since Beats took a $500 million investment from Carlyle in September 2013 that valued the company at more than $1 billion. Apple CEO Tim Cook said last month he was "on the prowl" for more acquisitions, noting that the company had acquired 24 companies in the past 18 months and was not averse to large acquisitions. "In terms of acquisitions, Apple has been very, very light in their activity," said Richard Lane, analyst at Moody’s. "I don’t think they’ve spent $1 billion in any of the last four years."

How big of a purchase is this for Apple?"

"Big. Cook told Kafka that Apple’s snapped up 27 companies between fiscal year 2013 and now, but the company’s second biggest buy after this $3 billion Beats deal was buying Steve Jobs’ NeXT Computer in 1997 for just north of $400 million."

Jimmy Iovine, einer der Beats-Gründer: “It was really a culture clash [...] It crashed and burned. It didn’t work out.”

PS.
