- At last, but by all means not least, here are some findings of the students of the first Design Thinking Master Class in 2017:

"DESIGN and THINKING are equally important"

- Have the customer in mind all the time

- Break the silos like those of the Brockhaus

- „We work: as a team, in a team… for our own“

- Collect the info’s, define the unknown, do the impossible

- Do focus more on basic needs and not on the technology

- Respect technology as a purpose but not as your destination

- Respect the learnings by doing MVPs

- Do early prototyping and real-time testing

- Look for feedback, it’s needed for survival (& improving the product)

- Learn from the (habits of the) people

- Be aware of empathy and activate contextual awareness

- Iterate relentlessly…

- "Fail, fail again, fail better"

- Search for entrepreneurial sustainability

- Look for authenticity and affiliation

- Don’t be afraid of Serendipity

[4This is a short talk and workshop (30’ + 90’) to give a first introduction to design thinking. Gives theory foundation, notes a few different approaches, and then dives into one of them. This presentation was first done at ImpactON / StartupChile evening in 2015.

The Design Thinking process first defines the problem and then implements the solutions, always with the needs of the user demographic at the core of concept development. This process focuses on needfinding, understanding, creating, thinking, and doing. At the core of this process is a bias towards action and creation: by creating and testing something, you can continue to learn and improve upon your initial ideas.

I developed my doctoral research on the use of service design tools as strategies to structure the front-end of the entrepreneurial process. I am currently working for an international design consultancy firm as a design researcher.

The planning and execution of an appropriate design strategy is crucial in order to maximize the potentialities of an organization’s design assets. However, many cognitive biases about design and its role in the organization still remain for many managers and decision makers. This article aims to clarify what those cognitive biases are and illustrate the so called ""third mind frame which is “design thinking”.Some authors point out that the stagnation present in many organizations is due to the fact that they remain focused for too long in the exploitation of current knowledge. Similarly, understanding design strategy as solely focusing in the management of existing design assets may risk creating ossification and obsolescence in the organization in the long term. Other branches of design such as advanced design could be of aid as a complement to design strategy and design management, in order to maintain the explorative side of design and keep exploring new business opportunities and new behaviors of consumers that could eventually translate into new products.

The Five things that all definitions of Design Thinking have in common:

1. Isolating and reframing the problem focused on the user.
2. Empathy. A design practitioner from IDEO, the popular design and innovation firm strapped a video camera to his head and it was only then that he recognized why the ceiling is such an important factor when working with hospital patients. As a patient you lay in bed and stare at it all day. It’s these little details and true empathy that can only be realized by putting oneself in the user’s shoes.
3. Approach things with an open mind and be willing to collaborate. Creativity with purpose is a team sport.
4. Curiosity. We have to harness our inner 5-year-old here and really be inquisitive explorers. Instead of seeing what would be or what should be, consider what COULD be.
5. Commitment. Brainstorming is easy. It’s easy to want to start a business or solve a problem. Seeing it into market and making it successful is not for the faint of heart. We’ve all read about big “wins” (multi-billion dollar acquisitions like Instagram and WhatsApp). What we don’t read about are people like Tony Fadell and Matt Rogers, who work for years before becoming industry sensations.
