NAB Day I

ALL INDUSTRY OPENING CEREMONY

9:00AM - 10:15AM

Las Vegas Hilton Barron Room

David Rehr
NAB President & CEO

NAB President and CEO Dr. David Rehr will deliver his first annual State of the Industry Address and Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, and Peter Jennings will be honored with the NAB Distinguished Service Award at this year’s All-Industry Opening.

"NAB looks forward to presenting our Distinguished Service Award to the three network anchors who largely defined television evening news for millions of Americans for more than 20 years," said NAB President and CEO David Rehr. "It is an honor to recognize the important role they played in all of our lives and their significant and lasting contributions to broadcasting."

Tom Brokaw [Anchor at NBC 1983 - 2004]

Tom Brokaw graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in political science. He began his television journalism career at KMTV-TV Omaha and after a stint at WSB-TV Atlanta joined NBC News in 1966. Brokaw was the White House correspondent for NBC News during Watergate, and from 1976 to 1981 he anchored Today on NBC. As the sole anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw from 1983 to 2005, Brokaw won every major award in broadcast journalism, including two DuPonts, a Peabody, and several Emmys. He lives in New York and Montana.

Peter Jennings [Anchor at ABC 1983 - 2005]

Peter Jennings was sole anchor of ABC World News Tonight from 1983 through 2005. He began his career in broadcasting as a radio reporter in Brockville, Ontario. After working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Jennings switched to CTV Network in 1960, where he later went on to co-anchor its national nightly newscast. While covering the civil rights movement in the South, Jennings gained recognition from ABC executives. In 1964, he joined the network and later served as anchor of Peter Jennings with the News from 1965 to 1967. In 1968, Jennings established the first American television news bureau in the Arab world when he became ABC News bureau chief for Beirut. After years covering stories around the globe, he was named foreign desk anchor of World News Tonight in 1978. Jennings co-anchored the program with Frank Reynolds and Max Robinson until 1983, when he was named sole anchor and senior editor. During the following 22 years in that position, he was honored with almost every major award given to television journalists.

Dan Rather [ Anchor at CBS 1981 - 2005]

Dan Rather served as anchor of CBS Evening News from 1981 until 2005. He began his career in 1950 as an Associated Press reporter in Huntsville before graduating from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1953. Later, he worked as a reporter for UPI, several Texas radio stations, and the Houston Chronicle. In 1959, he entered television as a reporter for KTRK-TV in Houston. Rather then joined CBS News in 1961 after stepping onto the national stage with his coverage of Hurricane Carla from Galveston, Texas. In 1963, Rather broke the news of the death of President John F. Kennedy and was instrumental in his coverage of the civil rights movement and Vietnam. His coverage of Watergate along with later successes led him to succeed Walter Cronkite as sole anchor of CBS Evening News in 1981.

Becoming the Hybrid Network: What Must Broadcasters Do?

For the broadcasters’ era of 2006 and beyond, rapid metamorphosis is a key concept. Broadcasters need to move quickly or their own caterpillar will never morph into a beautiful (and profitable) hybrid butterfly (while others do). During the last several years, broadcasters have been successfully transforming themselves out of the analog world and into the digital era, with new content and services. But, the migration for broadcasters to digital nirvana is only half complete, with the remaining half left to building more reliable and scalable Internet Protocol (IP) networks. These are networks that are expected to offer consumers new services, such as 2-way Internet broadband, Voice over IP (VoIP) and Video-On-Demand (VOD). And do Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) sweeten or sour the mix? What partnerships will broadcasters make, with what technology vendors, to help them build an efficient infrastructure and distribute the rich new IP-based content? What breed of networking technologies must broadcasters deploy to manage the converged digital services, while offering security, reliability and scalability? The challenge is always to meet escalating consumer demands, while keeping overhead and capital costs down. Find out what top executives and analysts have to say about broadcasters turning the digital corner in these exciting, yet incredibly challenging, times.
