Marking its 40th anniversary, transmediale RFC 40 presents a festival and an exhibition. Curated by Barbara Cueto and under the title groundstates, the festival’s programme will take place during the last week of January 2027 in silent green Kulturquartier. The exhibition fragile currents is curated by Antonina Stebur and will be on show at Akademie der Künste (Hanseatenweg) until March.

RFC 40 is a document from the early history of the internet. The 40th in a series that over time created the specifications and protocols that configured the workings of the internet. Its name was chosen to avoid being deterministic: Request for Comments made no claim to finality. It acknowledged that no single voice had the complete picture, and that any protocol would only stabilise through collective response and revision. These were, by design, open drafts that invited disagreement as a condition of progress. How does a network stay legible to itself while things are breaking down? A question RFC 40 was working through, and questions that, in a way, remain unsolved and relevant today. Published in March 1970 and inspiring transmediale at its 40th anniversary, RFC 40 was titled more comments on the forthcoming protocol.
Over four decades, transmediale stayed at the crossroads of a network of artists, researchers, and practitioners working at the margins of dominant technological culture, sustaining forms of exchange, knowledge production, and collective imagination towards a different kind of technomediated present. Looking at this becoming, transmediale acts as a counter-infrastructure; an ever-evolving practice, shaped by and responding to changing conditions and demands.
Festival: groundstates
28-31 January 2027
Under the title groundstates, the festival unfolds as a decentralised system, foregrounding a multiplicity of internets and resisting the expectation of a single technological future. It looks at the subterranean currents of imagination that build collective stories, rabbit holes, and speculations of the communities populating semi-shadowed worlds. At its core, the festival presents a discursive and performance programme across four days, bringing embodied reflection to questions that resist analysis and critique alone. groundstates revolves around the human scale of technology to bring forward new forms of collective stewardship.
Exhibition: fragile currents
28 Jan-7 March 2027
Political and technological realities are increasingly organised at an infrastructural level, revealing complex networks of dependencies, asymmetries, and unequal positions across the globe. Working with ruins as a method, fragile currents treats infrastructural breakdown not as a moment of collapse but as a condition from which other forms of organisation can emerge. The exhibition presents a series of artworks and installations, organised around a living centre: an agora-like installation that holds space for a public programme developed with partner institutions operating in contexts shaped by extractivism, technological dependency, and infrastructural fragility, including Greece, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Chile.

Zum 40 Jubiläum findet die transmediale RFC 40 in der letzten Januarwoche 2027 statt. Die Jubiläumsausgabe präsentiert das Festivalprogramm unter dem Titel groundstates im silent green Kulturquartier, kuratiert von Barbara Cueto, sowie fragile currents, eine Ausstellung in der Akademie der Künste (Hanseatenweg), die von Antonina Stebur kuratiert wird und bis März zu sehen ist.

RFC 40 ist ein Dokument aus den Anfängen der Geschichte des Internets. Das 40. seiner Art in einer Reihe von technischen Spezifikationen, Protokollen und Ereignissen, die die Funktionsweise des heutigen Internets mitgeprägt haben. Der Name RFC wurde gewählt, um jede Determiniertheit zu vermeiden: Request for Comments erhob keinen Anspruch auf Endgültigkeit. Vielmehr wurde so hervorgehoben, dass keine einzelne Perspektive das vollständige Bild überblicken kann und dass sich jedes Protokoll nur durch kollektive Rückmeldung und Revision stabilisiert. Diese Textdokumente waren bewusst als offene Entwürfe angelegt, die Widerspruch als Bedingung des Fortschritts einluden. Wie bleibt ein Netzwerk integer, während Dinge auseinanderfallen? Das sind die Fragen, mit denen RFC 40 rang; Fragen, die gewissermaßen ungelöst und aktuell geblieben sind. Das im März 1970 veröffentlichte RFC 40 trug den sonoren Titel more comments on the forthcoming protocol und bildet den Ausgangspunkt der Jubiläumsausgabe von transmediale in 2027.
Über vier Jahrzehnte baute die transmediale ein Netzwerk von Künstler:innen, Forscher:innen und Praktiker:innen auf, die an den Rändern der dominanten Technologiekultur arbeiten und Formen des Austauschs, der Wissensproduktion und der kollektiven Vorstellungskraft aufrechterhalten, die unsere durch Technologie vermittelten Gegenwart auf andere Weise gestalten.

Unter dem Titel groundstates entfaltet sich das Festival als dezentralisiertes System, das von einer Vielzahl von Internets ausgeht und der Erwartung eines singulären technologischen Zukunftsnarrativs widersteht. Den Kern des Festivals bildet ein diskursives und performatives Programm über vier Tage, das eine Bandbreite von Ansätzen für alternative technologische Zukünfte erkundet. groundstates nimmt den menschlichen Maßstab von Technologie zum Ausgangspunkt, um neue Formen der kollektiven Verantwortung im Umgang mit Technologie hervorzubringen.
Ausstellung: fragile currents

Politische und technologische Realitäten sind heute infrastrukturell verschränkt und offenbaren globale Netze von Abhängigkeiten, Asymmetrien und ungleichen Positionen. fragile currents arbeitet mit Ruinen als Methode im Sinne von Überresten, die zeigen, was war und was noch wirkt. Infrastruktureller Zusammenbruch erscheint so nicht als Kollaps, sondern als Bedingung, aus der andere Organisationsformen entstehen können. Die Ausstellung präsentiert eine Reihe von Installationen und organisiert sich um ein lebendiges Zentrum: eine agoraartige Installation, die Raum hält für ein Begleitprogramm, das gemeinsam mit internationalen Partnern entwickelt wird. Diese sind in Kontexten situiert, die von Extraktivismus, technologischer Abhängigkeit und infrastruktureller Fragilität geprägt sind, darunter Griechenland, die Ukraine, Kasachstan und Chile.
